Scholar Checkout

All VOECP scholars visit the library with their classroom teachers.   Scholars in  come to the library once a week for checkout, story time and library instruction.  Scholars in 3-5 come to the library once every other week. Below is the number of books a scholar may check out each visit keeping in mind PREK-2 have a one week due date and 3-5 have 2 weeks.

  • PREK-One book that is left in the classroom
  • 1st and 2nd checkout two books weekly
  • 3rd and 4th checkout three books bi-weekly
  • 5th grade checks out five books bi-weekly

Important reminder:  If a scholar fails to return all books on their library day (either weekly or bi-weekly) they are blocked from checking out new books until they are clear.  However, all scholars have additional open library times where they can come on a pass and check out new books daily.  This allows those students that forget their books on library day to be responsible and return their books the following day.

Parent Checkout

Parents are encouraged to come to the library for checkout.  A parent can check out up to 5 books per student and have them for two weeks.  However, parents are encouraged and welcome to come daily and get five new ones!

AR TOP DOG READER Program

VOECP uses the Accelerated Reader program to enhance independent reading and comprehension for scholars in grades 1-5.  Second through 5th grade students are expected to read and pass 2 AR tests per week with 80%.    Popular literature is read and then scholars take a comprehension test on the computer to check for understanding.  The goals are to increase a scholar’s comprehension, their independent reading level, and help scholars find authors and subjects they enjoy.  Scholars in grade 1 begin the program after Christmas break.  Scholars are encouraged to take their books home to read with their parents and siblings.
